WEEK6 - Introducing - Lourie Zipf
Tell us a little about the focus of your work.
Recently, I came across a wonderful quote by Margaret Bourke-White, in
which she said, "Saturate yourself with your subject and the camera
will all but take you by the hand." This quote has very special meaning
to me, as getting to know and understand my subject has always been of
the utmost importance. I have also always viewed the camera as a tool
for telling a story. This partly stems from my early days as a
photojournalist. I strive for the same thing now when photographing
horses, especially when photographing people and horses together. It's
difficult to explain the immense bond that people have with their
horses. I think it's something that only the horse owner can
understand. The picture is a wonderful way to express that strong
emotional connection between horses and owners and I hope to some
degree, that my photographs are able to achieve that. The use of
natural light is also very important to me. Horses are powerful
creatures, with muscular, well-defined bodies.
The way the light glimmers and shines from the vast array of coat
colors and all the while, it constantly changes as the horse moves, is
unmatched with any other subject.
Do you enjoy traveling? Where do you find your subjects?
My equine photography has taken me throughout Colorado, as well as to
neighboring states, including Wyoming, New Mexico and Montana. As a
newspaper photographer, I was fortunate enough to travel all over the
United States, including those areas that were completely unfamiliar to
me, such as the Midwest and the Southeast. I returned to my western
roots about 10 years ago by moving to Northern Colorado. That is where
I live today. I do hope to travel again to the Southeast and Midwest.
One of my aspirations is to someday photograph the Kentucky Derby. I
also hope to shoot Rolex, as well as some of the other four star CCI
events.
